Robert W. Hoag is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Berea College in Kentucky. He held the Henry Mixter Penniman Chair in Philosophy, served as department and academic division chair, and received the College’s excellence in teaching award. His areas of specialization are ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law, both current topics and historical texts, especially John Stuart Mill’s consequentialism. Teaching and scholarly pursuits in philosophy include contemporary issues at the intersections of law, morality, and governance, such as capital punishment, abortion, civil disobedience, affirmative action, distributive justice, the limits of criminal law and legal moralism, free speech, the morality of war, human rights, and armed humanitarian interventions.
