Erica Fretwell

Erica Fretwell is assistant professor of English at the University at Albany, SUNY. Her book Sensory Experiments: Psychophysics, Race, and the Aesthetics of Feeling (Duke UP, 2020) uncovers the influence of psychophysics – the science of sensory experience – on affective configurations of racial embodiment in nineteenth-century America. Her essays have appeared in American Literary HistoryJ19, Timelines of American Literature (ed. Marrs and Hager), The New Walt Whitman Studies (ed. Cohen), and The Cambridge Companion to Literature and Food (ed. Coghlan). Her next project, “Off Script,” tracks the development of haptic literacies and other tactile epistemologies in the nineteenth-century “age of craft.”
