Cathal Doherty SJ is a Jesuit priest and theologian. A linguistics professor before entering the Society of Jesus, he completed doctoral degrees in theoretical linguistics (University of California, Santa Cruz, 1993) and, as a Jesuit, in Catholic theology (Boston College, 2015),where he worked under Oliva Blanchette on Maurice Blondel’s philosophy of religion. Prior to joining the faculty at Marquette, he taught at University of San Francisco, Boston College and University College Dublin, Ireland. His main research interests lie in dogmatic theology,especially in the nature-grace relationship and sacraments, in addition to linguistics and the philosophy of religion. He is the author of Maurice Blondel on the Supernatural in Human Action: Sacrament and Superstition, Brill (2017) and his most recent articles focus on sacramental causality and Maurice Blondel’s philosophy of human action.
