Claudio Carvalhaes

Originally from São Paulo Brazil, Dr. Carvalhaes is a former shoe shining boy and now is an activist, liturgist, theologian and artist. Having received his PhD at Union Theological Seminary in NYC, he is currently the Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at the McCormick Theological Seminary. In 2009-2010 he received The Kentucky Metroversity Outstanding Faculty of Adult Learners Award. He has several chapters/articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, has 3 books published in Brazil, and his first book in English is Eucharist and Globalization: Redrawing the Borders of Eucharistic Hospitality (Wipf and Stock, Pickwick Publications, 2013).  His second book will be called What has Worship to do with it? Interpreting Life Liturgically (Cascade Publications 2017). He edited Only One is Holy: Liturgy in Postcolonial Lenses (Palgrave, 2015). He worked for 5 years with the largest social movement in the world: Brazilian Landless Movement and is now involved with different social initiatives. He performed in Brazil, Mozambique, Germany, El Salvador and US. In the Fall of 2016 he will join the Union Theological Seminary in New York City as Associate Professor of Worship.
