Ashleigh Elser is a doctoral candidate in the Scripture, Interpretation and Practice program in the Religious Studies department at the University of Virginia. She is currently working on a dissertation that considers the hermeneutic and theological problems posed by Higher Critical scholarship as well as various attempts to respond to these problems and the anxieties that accompanied them by framing the Bible as “literature.”
