Kieran Way is an anthropologist whose research examines decolonization, institutional practice, and the relationship between good intentions and meaningful social change. As a student in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, Way conducted ethnographic research at the Thunder Bay Public Library, studying how decolonization manifests within a public institution and in its everyday practices. Way’s academic background also includes development studies and social policy, and their professional experience includes work with nongovernmental organizations in India and Cambodia. This work helped shape a particular interest in the tensions that arise when well-intentioned professionals and institutions attempt to address complex social problems but encounter resistance, failure, or outcomes that fall short of their stated objectives. Way’s research explores how good intentions persist under such conditions and what these tensions reveal about institutional efforts to pursue decolonization and broader forms of social change.
