David Newheiser is Associate Professor of Religion at Florida State University, where his research examines the role of religious traditions in debates about ethics, politics, and culture. Trained in medieval Christian thought and contemporary philosophy, he works across political theology, democratic theory, philosophy of religion, and poststructuralist ethics. Newheiser earned his PhD in Religion from the University of Chicago and an MPhil in Early Christian Thought from Oxford University. He is the author of Hope in a Secular Age, which explores the relationship between religious faith, uncertainty, and political commitment, and editor of The Varieties of Atheism. He also co-edited Art-Making as Spiritual Practice. His scholarship addresses subjects including secularism, sexuality, neoliberalism, atheism, art, and democratic imagination. Newheiser is co-editor of the Journal for the Academic Study of Religion, and his current book project examines medieval miracle traditions and their relationship to democratic imagination.
